The play

Irène, an Austrian woman from the 1920s, is a bourgeois and a feminist, unfortunately unfaithful. One day, she gets caught by her lover’s wife, who asks her for money. It initiates a process that will drive her into terror, a suicide attempt, and an end, which, without spoiling it, is absolutely amazing as well as instrumental to the purpose of the text and of Zweig’s psychological realism.

These are the years of women’s emancipation, the Bovarys, and women’s demands for happiness and desire. Staging the play using frames on wheels is perfectly adequate. This option of a mobile and modular decor takes the limits of the rooms and psyches beyond the stage, beyond what one sees, beyond what is said. At the same time this scenography illustrates how this intrigue slowly confines each character, smothered by the décor. Addressed as well here are the questions of truth and justice, how they are constantly confronted with human justice, after fighting with our unconscious.
